Now that we can see how massive of a problem this was for GM vehicles in the 2000's, let's work our way through some of the technical jargon before we get too far.
What is a stepper motor?
A stepper motor is a gear driven motor that is used to move the individual gauges of your instrument panel cluster. Stepper motors were developed as a replacement for older air-core motors that were used previously to drive your gauges. The advantage to stepper motors is that they allowed for every motor to be the same in an instrument cluster where as older air-core motor designs required each motor to be individually wound depending on which gauge it was to be used for. So for example with air-core motors you couldn't use the exact same motor for a speedometer as you would on a tachometer. Where as with stepper motors every single gauge in your instrument panel cluster can be driven by their own identical motor.
What kind of issues are these vehicles experiencing?
While the instrument clusters experience many different issues as a result of failures of other components such as the night time backlighting or failures, we're only going to focus on what issues we see that are caused by the stepper motors. These stepper motors are infamous for the following problems:
-Gauges seizing up and no longer moving
-Gauges not being able to find their home or zero
-Gauges reading off of printed scale
-Gauges showing incorrect readings
What can be done to correct these problems?
Luckily we rebuild the instrument panel clusters listed for every single vehicle listed above. As a standard part of our repair process we do replace every stepper motor in your instrument panel cluster to ensure you're not going to have an issue in the near future. Urban Legends, FAQ and More
Due to how widespread the problems are with these instrument panel clusters and their notoriously defective stepper motors we've heard countless claims, myths and urban legends over the years surrounding these specific stepper motors. As a result we figured we'd better include a FAQ that helps to demystify some of the questions people have surrounding these stepper motors.
Q: Do you use the Switec X27.168 Stepper motor in the modules you repair?
A: Yes we do!
Q: My stepper motors have XC5.168, X15.168, or X25.168 wrote on them, are these the same as the X27.168 stepper motor?
A: These are the earlier revisions of the X27.168. They're far more failure prone than the X27.168 and as such we would not recommend using them at all. Our internal testing shows they're good for usually 3-4 years of normal daily driving usage on average.
Q: Are X27.168 the same as X27.288, X27.569, X27.579, X27.589, X27.679, or X27.689?
A: Absolutely not. All of these motors will either have different internal gearing that will make the movement different or they will mount to the circuit board differently, or have different shaft diameters for the pointer. Either way none of these will work in the place of the X27.168.
Q: Does the Switec X27.168 actually fix the stepper motor issues permanently?
A: Unfortunately not. As of the time of writing there is no stepper motor that prevents reoccurence of stepper motor issues in these instrument panel clusters. While many repair facilities and sources online will claim that the X27.168 will resolve your issues permanently, we've found in our experience that you will generally find that the X27.168 will have about 5-7 years of normal daily driving usage before it will experience issues again. Comparatively many of the earlier revisions of this same stepper motor we had found were generally good for 3-4 years of normal daily driving usage.
Q: Are there alternatives to the Switec X27.168 that work as well?
A: The only alternative to the Switec X27.168 that has shown to have similar performance is the MR1109. Our internal testing has shown that this stepper motor appears to be good for about 5-7 years of normal daily driving. You'll find many online sources claiming that these motors are an inferior product, however that doesn't seem to be the case. There are many other stepper motors sold for this application such as a black motor that often doesn't have any writing on it. We absolutely do not recommend using those.
Q: I can find X27.168 stepper motors online. Are these the same ones you use?
A: This one we won't have too many definitive answers on. We have seen clones of the X27.168 online that are not the genuine motors from the manufacturer Switec. It's not to say that all of the ones you see online aren't the real deal, but there's definitely some fakes floating around that we've encountered that have an extremely low lifespan.
Q: Do you guys sell these stepper motors?
A: We don't sell any components at the time of writing this post.
Q: Do you guys only replace one of my stepper motors if only one has failed?
A: No we do not. The reason for this is because at the stage that one motor has failed we're able to see the early signs of failure on your other motors. Commonly this shows up as a grinding noise either on startup or during movement of the motor. As well when it comes to stepper motors you'll often find that the life expectancy of each motor is fair consistent. This means that opening your instrument panel cluster just to replace this one motor is entirely senseless as you're likely to need the rest replaced in the immediate future.
