Module Cloning - A Quick FAQ

As we continue our work to expand the list of services that you can find on www.kelownainstruments.com we noticed we were getting a lot of calls about one service in particular - module cloning. Plenty of customers have over the years called to ask if we can do module cloning or how module cloning works. In our efforts to ensure we can provide as much information as possible for all of the services we offer, we put together a small FAQ about it.

What is module cloning?

Module cloning is the process of taking your original module that has failed, and transferring it's data to a replacement module that is working. Many customers might prefer this alternative to having your original failed module repaired if they're able to find a replacement module at a reasonable price.

Why do I need module cloning?

Many modules in vehicles produced after 2000 have software calibrations, codings and data such as your vehicle's VIN that might be required to be transferred to any possible replacement module before it works correctly in your car.

What do I need to do to have my module cloned?

As a rule of thumb, we'd want both your original failed module and your replacement module. Even if your original module has failed catastrophically and isn't able to turn on we are almost always able to recover your data from that module. We recommend speaking to on of our expert technicians if you're unable to provide the original failed module for whatever reason.

In order to have the most success with module cloning, what should I look for part number wise for my replacement module?

You want to ensure that your replacement module is the exact same part number as your original. This was guarantee the highest likelyhood of success in the replacement process. However in some cases we're able to make this process work without your exact same part number. The success rate of using a different part number will vary module to module. If you're looking to have your module cloned and your replacement module is a different part number than your original please contact our expert technicians for more information.

Why use Kelowna Instruments for module cloning?

Unlike the majority of other companies that offer module cloning services we stand out from the crowd as we actually produce our own programming equipment that we use in the module cloning process. This allows us to clone and reprogram modules that others cannot. We also actively recover, disassemble and analyze module firmwares that allows us to gain a level of insight and expertise into the modules we service that when combined with our more than 23 years of experience in module cloning, you'd struggle to find anywhere else. Our vertical integration and ability to manufacture programming equipment for this purpose also allows us to offer these services for a lower cost than other competitors.

What modules can be cloned?

This is currently a complicated question - one that we're in the process of remediating. In September we're hoping to start rolling out cloning services on our website for the individual modules that we can clone. But as with our repair services, if you cannot find the cloning service listed for your module please reach out and our expert technicians can help to get you answers on whether we can help with your module.

Should I attempt to repair my original module or get a replacement and get it cloned?

Our recommendation is almost always to get your original module replaced. The reason for this is the majority of the modules we offer repair services for are because the original modules have an extremely high failure rate. This means that often you'll find when you're searching for a replacement that it is likely to have failed or be on it's way to failing as well. For this reason we recommend having your original module repaired so that we can ensure you're going to get the longest life span from that module after you've had us service it.

If for any reason you've got any questions that we haven't covered in this FAQ please don't hestitate to reach out and speak to one of our technicians to ensure we can get you the information you need to get your vehicle back on the road. Keep your eyes peeled for us starting to list our module cloning services here on www.kelownainstruments.com starting in September!
